7 Lock Emergencies and What to Do in Each
Lockouts, break-ins, snapped keys and more: the first steps that keep a bad moment from getting worse.
Locksmith guide
A step-by-step look at what an after-hours locksmith does, from the first assessment to rekeying.
Anything outside normal business hours: late evenings, early mornings, weekends. Being locked out of your home or car at night tends to feel more urgent, and it is.
On arrival, the locksmith confirms who you are, looks at the lock and the door or vehicle, and explains the options. The price should be confirmed at this point, before any tools come out.
For most standard locks, picking or bypass tools get the door open without damage. Drilling is reserved for damaged, high-security or very worn locks, and should be explained first.
If the keys were lost or stolen, rekey before you go to sleep. If the lock was drilled, it will need replacing; the locksmith can usually fit a new one on the same visit.
Save a locksmith's number, keep a spare key with someone nearby, and know your car's year, make and model.
After-hours lockouts are stressful, but the process is straightforward. See the emergency locksmith page or call 626-537-2128.
