7 Lock Emergencies and What to Do in Each
Lockouts, break-ins, snapped keys and more: the first steps that keep a bad moment from getting worse.
Locksmith guide
Knowing how the call, the price and the visit work takes some of the stress out of a late-night lockout.
When you call, expect questions: your address, the nearest cross street, what is locked, and the type of lock or vehicle. Answer briefly. The dispatcher uses it to estimate the price and find a contractor.
Ask for the estimate before you agree to anything. On this service it starts from the published price list: a $29 service call fee plus labor and parts. Late hours can add to the cost. The contractor should confirm the total on site before starting.
Most lockouts take minutes once the locksmith arrives. Non-destructive entry comes first. If the key was lost, consider a rekey while they are there.
You pay the contractor who does the work. Major credit cards are accepted. Get an invoice showing the work, the total and any warranty.
